UTEP Miners

UTEP sits at 1-5 overall and 0-2 in Mountain West play under head coach Scotty Walden, who is now 5-19 at the school. The Miners opened with a 51-0 loss at Oklahoma and a 52-17 defeat at Michigan, then dropped home games to Oregon State (33-7) and Nevada (30-13) and a road game at New Mexico (61-7). Their only win came against FCS Texas Southern, 51-10. The step up from Conference USA to the Mountain West has been unforgiving, and the schedule has included two Power Four road trips.

The Miners have scored 7 points or fewer in four of their five games against FBS opponents, with the lone exception being a 17-point showing at Michigan that came off two first-half turnovers. Against Oklahoma, Oregon State, New Mexico, and Nevada, UTEP managed 198, 7, 7, and 13 points, respectively. The rebuilt offensive line, which starts four transfers alongside right tackle Juan Camacho Jr., has only held up against Texas Southern. Quarterback EJ Colson has shown dual-threat ability (four passing touchdowns and a rushing score against Texas Southern, plus 49 rushing yards on 12 carries), but he has been under siege against better fronts. Running back Tavorus Jones ran for 104 yards against Texas Southern but has found little room since. The offense's 211 total yards against Nevada marked a season low in Mountain West play.

The secondary, led by safety Xavier Smith and corner Justin Content, was expected to be the strength of the defense, but the unit has been torched by every competent offense it has faced. Oklahoma's John Mateer threw for 225 yards in three quarters, Oregon State's Braden Atkinson threw for 301 yards and three scores, New Mexico's Toa Fa'avae threw for 249 yards and three touchdowns, and Nevada's Herschel Turner ran for 192 yards. The Miners have allowed 30 or more points in all five FBS games and rank near the bottom nationally in points allowed. The pass rush, led by Ashton Coker and Derek Burns, has not generated consistent pressure without blitzing, leaving the secondary exposed. Linebacker Jayden Wilson remains a bright spot, but the overall defensive performance has been a major vulnerability.

UTEP has been hurt by special teams and turnovers throughout the season. Against Oklahoma, the Miners missed two field goals on their only real drives of the first half. Against New Mexico, they allowed a 65-yard interception return for a touchdown and a blocked punt for a safety, part of five turnovers. Against Nevada, their only first-half touchdown came on a short field after a fumble recovery. Placekicker Cade Hechter, a second-team FCS All-American at UT Martin, has not yet provided the stability the staff hoped for. Punter Brady Braun has been busy, but the return game, led by Kam Thomas, has not broken a big play since Thomas's 83-yard touchdown catch against Texas Southern.

UTEP returns home to face San José State on October 18, then has remaining Mountain West games against teams closer to its own talent level. The Miners are 1-5 against the spread and have covered only once, but they have been competitive in spurts, such as leading Michigan twice in the first half and driving 75 yards for a late touchdown against Nevada. For the season to show progress, the offensive line must protect Colson and open lanes for Jones, and the defense must generate pressure without extra blitzers. Colson's dual-threat ability remains the best hope for keeping drives alive. With Walden's job security likely tied to showing improvement, the final six games are critical for evaluating whether the rebuild is on track.
