Wyoming Cowboys SP+ Profile

Offence+16.0124 of 138higher is better
Defence+25.060 of 138lower is better
Special teams-0.6130 of 138higher is better

SP+ is an independent opponent-adjusted efficiency rating, one of the systems blended into the Blue Chip Analytics power rating rather than a Blue Chip Analytics number itself. Defensive SP+ measures points allowed, so a lower figure is a better defence - the rank beside it already accounts for that.

How Confident Is This Rating?

Sources blended5
Source spread±2.3 pts
HFA measured+5.4 pts
HFA applied+3.3 pts

Source spread is how far apart the independent rating systems are on this team, not a margin of error on our own number. A wide spread means the models disagree, which is itself worth knowing.

The measured home field advantage of +5.4 is regressed to +3.3 before it is applied, a difference of 2.1 points. A single venue's raw result carries a lot of noise, so the applied figure is pulled toward the league pattern. See how much is home field advantage really worth.

Wyoming Cowboys Season Outlook

Defense reloads at linebacker but stays strong up the middle

Wyoming finished fifth in the Mountain West in total defense last year, but the linebacker corps is almost entirely new. Ethan Stuhlsatz steps into the middle linebacker role after a strong spring, and Gary Rutherford joins him, with USC transfer Anthony Beavers also in the mix. The secondary returns safety Jones Thomas, the team's leading tackler from a year ago, and nickel back Desman Hearns. Thomas had two interceptions and four pass breakups in 2025 and is a candidate for all-league honors. Up front, defensive tackle Dante Drake is back after missing all of 2025 with an Achilles injury, and he should anchor the line alongside veteran Jayden Williams. The unit looks solid through the middle at all three levels, which should keep games close.

A weakened Mountain West opens a path to a bowl game

Head coach Jay Sawvel enters his third season with a 7-17 record and no bowl appearance yet, but the conference landscape may help. The Mountain West is considered weaker this year, and Wyoming's schedule includes a season opener at Colorado State, a rivalry game that could set the tone. The Cowboys played in a lot of close games last year, and with a more experienced quarterback and a defense that should keep them in contests, a bowl berth is a realistic goal. The team's physical style, with big offensive linemen and hard-hitting linebackers, should wear down opponents over the course of a game.

Trends to watch: offensive line health and young receivers

The offensive line is a strength on paper, with both starting tackles back and a transfer at center, but depth could be tested. At receiver, Deion DeBlanc is the leader of a young group, while Eric Richardson saw spot duty last year and Jackson Holman battled injuries. The tight end position should help, with Jake Wilson and Kyle Frendt both capable targets. If the line stays healthy and the receivers develop, Hughes could have enough weapons to push the offense past last year's 16-point average. If not, the Cowboys will rely even more on the run game and defense to stay competitive.
