Florida International Panthers

The Panthers enter 2026 with a revamped offense led by transfer quarterback JJ Kohl, who stands 6-foot-7 and 250 pounds. After completing 61.6% of his passes for 1,465 yards, 12 touchdowns and only two interceptions at Appalachian State in 2025, Kohl brings a steady, efficient presence. He replaces Keyone Jenkins (transferred to UCF) and will rely on a deep receiving corps that includes returning wideouts Kyle McNeal, Maguire Anderson and Jojo Stone, plus FCS transfer Greg Gaines III, a 1,000-yard receiver at Rhode Island. The offensive line, however, lost all five starters and must be rebuilt around returnees Zaire Flournoy and Antonio Tripp Jr., making protection and run-game consistency a key question.

FIU must replace 1,300-yard rusher Kejon Owens, who departed for the pros. The top returning back is Anthony Carrie, who rushed for 469 yards and five touchdowns in 2025 after transferring from Georgia Tech. He is a solid, physical runner, but the Panthers lack proven depth behind him. The offensive line's inexperience could limit Carrie's effectiveness early, though the unit's athleticism and size (as noted by an opposing CUSA assistant) suggest potential for growth as the season progresses.

The defensive line returns two productive edge rushers: Kenton Simmons (eight tackles for loss, six sacks, second-team All-CUSA in 2025) and Dante Anderson (three sacks). They are joined by defensive tackle Germaine Carter (19 tackles, 1.5 sacks) and West Virginia transfer Elijah Simmons, adding depth and size. This group should generate consistent pressure, especially against conference opponents, and will be the backbone of a defense that prides itself on athleticism and length.

The defensive backfield is a strength, led by safety Shamir Sterlin (65 tackles, Freshman All-CUSA in 2025) and Demetrius Hill. The cornerback room features Da'Vontae Floyd, Jai-Ayviauynn Celestine and Lawrence Johnson, all long, athletic players who can challenge receivers. Nickel DeAndre Boykins adds versatility. This group's ability to limit big plays will be critical, especially early in the season as the offense finds its rhythm.

FIU has a dynamic return game with Maguire Anderson, who returned a punt 97 yards for a touchdown against UTSA in the 2025 First Responder Bowl. He and Devonte Lyons give the Panthers a chance to flip field position. Kicker Robert Czeremcha (2-of-3 in 2025) and punter Stone Springman (Miami transfer) are unproven but have the talent to be reliable. Special teams could provide a crucial edge in close games.
