Milivojevic's quick decision-making and the line's cohesion will determine whether the offense can move from average to effective.

Despite line concerns, the offense has intriguing weapons. Running back Cam Edwards produced 1,240 scrimmage yards at UConn, tight end Carson Gulker brings versatility from a Division II national champion, and receiver Chrishon McCray adds speed. Coordinator Nick Sheridan's scheme aims to put these playmakers in space, promising explosive moments even if consistency is a challenge.

Michigan State's defense forced only nine turnovers last season, tied for sixth-fewest in the FBS, largely due to a thin defensive line that struggled to generate pressure. The linebacker corps, led by Jordan Hall and transfers Caleb Wheatland and Dion Crawford, is deeper, but the front four remains a vulnerability. The secondary, with Nikai Martinez and Charles Brantley, has talent but needs the pass rush to create opportunities.

New special teams coordinator LeVar Woods, formerly of Iowa, brings a detailed, disciplined approach. Punter Rhys Dakin follows Woods from Iowa, while kicker Liam Boyd has shown range but inconsistency on short kicks. The return game features a deep group of speedy wideouts. Special teams could be a stabilizing force in a season where every phase is still finding its identity.
