Syracuse Orange SP+ Profile

Offence+23.985 of 138higher is better
Defence+25.058 of 138lower is better
Special teams+0.436 of 138higher is better

SP+ is an independent opponent-adjusted efficiency rating, one of the systems blended into the Blue Chip Analytics power rating rather than a Blue Chip Analytics number itself. Defensive SP+ measures points allowed, so a lower figure is a better defence - the rank beside it already accounts for that.

How Confident Is This Rating?

Sources blended5
Source spread±2.6 pts
HFA measured+2.6 pts
HFA applied+2.5 pts

Source spread is how far apart the independent rating systems are on this team, not a margin of error on our own number. A wide spread means the models disagree, which is itself worth knowing.

The measured and applied home field advantage agree to within 0.1 points here, so smoothing changes little for this venue.

Syracuse Orange Season Outlook

Quarterback health is the season's hinge

Steve Angeli's return from a torn Achilles is the single biggest factor in Syracuse's 2026 outlook. He was leading the nation in passing yards (1,317) when he went down in 2025, and the Orange went 3-9 without him, never scoring more than 18 points in any of the eight losses. He was limited in spring practice but is expected to be ready for fall camp. Behind him, the backup situation is unproven, with transfers Amari Odom (Kennesaw State) and Malachi Nelson (UTEP) competing for the No. 2 role. If Angeli stays upright, the offense has a chance to be dangerous; if he goes down again, the season could spiral quickly.

Defensive line overhaul aims to fix run defense

Syracuse's run defense was among the worst in the country last year, allowing 5.3 yards per carry, which ranked 132nd out of 136 FBS teams. New defensive coordinator Vince Kehres inherits a reloaded front with three key transfers: Dillan Fontus (Maryland), Keyshawn Johnson (UT-Martin), and Tunmise Adeleye (UNLV). The scheme is expected to mix 4-3 and 3-4 looks, but the key will be execution in run fits and communication on the back end. Interior linebackers Chris D'Appolonia and Antoine Deslauriers will be responsible for getting everyone aligned, while the corners are likely to be asked to play heavy man coverage.

Special teams are solid at kicker, unproven at punter

Placekicker Tripp Woody returns after a strong 2025 season, making 12 of 14 field goals, including all 10 attempts from inside 40 yards. That reliability is a comfort in close games. However, the Orange must replace standout punter Jack Stonehouse, and they are hoping highly touted prospect Jimmy Gregg can step in and provide similar consistency. If Gregg struggles, field position could become a hidden weakness.

Early schedule offers a chance to build momentum

Syracuse opens the season at home against New Hampshire, a game where they are heavy favorites (line -33.5, 98% win probability). This is a chance to get Angeli and the new skill players comfortable in a live game before the ACC slate begins. The season travel is relatively light at 3,424 miles, which could help with recovery and preparation. The key will be whether the Orange can use this early stretch to build confidence and establish an identity on both sides of the ball, especially with a new defensive system and so many new faces on offense.
